Will Taken Out Be TEN's Perfect Match?
Editorial ReviewJames Kerley hosts Channel TEN's latest dating game Taken Out.
Editorial Review
“Oooh-ahhh-ooh” was the old music Perfect Match used to woo us with every night during the 1980s. Greg Evans, Dexter the robot, teased perms and piano key ties - it was a love affair that lasted from 1984 to 1989 on Channel TEN. Now the network is giving us another dating show: Taken Out.It's an ambitious idea for Channel TEN, especially since Yasmin's Getting Married lasted all of two nights in 2006. Hosted by James Kerley, Taken Out is a high tech game show where single girls learn more about an eligible bachelor and decide if he is someone they see as a potential love interest. If he's not their 'Mr. Right' the girls are presented with a new single to cast their eye over. Naturally, TEN also flips the singles with 30 guys and one woman (word is they've had a hard time finding enough guys to kick things off).
Dating shows of course hark back to America's The Dating Game in 1965. In The Newlywed Game (US 1966) couples were tested on their knowledge of one another. Cilla Black hosted Blind Date in the UK in 1985, and hands up who remembers Studs (US 1991)?
But the dating concept has morphed in recent years, shifting from mere game show to reality. Temptation Island was a big hit in the US, UK and Australia. Instead of hearing whether couples snored during their sleep or still burnt a candle for their ex, now we were seeing it. Cheating couples were frolicking in the spa, only to be abused by their fiancees.
Then there's the whole Bachelor concept. A single rose is given to the lucky guy /girl /millionaire /farmer /gay guy /bisexual (let's not even mention There's Something About Miriam). These things are always set in luxurious settings, frequently mansions. Aspiration is pivotal, after all.
TEN really needs a new hit in its ailing 7pm timeslot. At that hour the show isn't likely to do much more than kissing on its first TV date, but the trick will be enticing viewers back for more than one sitting. If it doesn't work, maybe TEN could rerun some of those old Perfect Match episodes. We'd happily sit through a few retro episodes of bad hair and bad dates.
Taken Out premieres 7pm Monday, 1 September on TEN.

Louie: All the negative people down there arent opening their eyes, this show is one of the best shows... Just sit back and relax stop being such tight arses and you might have a laugh, and learn a thing or two, and know how to improve yourself... Sure you can go out, mingle and socialise, but even still, most of the time you wont get anywhere, and you'll be walking away wondering why.. This show brings you some insight and some answers. 10/10 (09 September 2008)
